Literature isn't just words on a page; it's a form of magic that builds new worlds in our minds. When discussing the contemporary Sinhala novel, Mohan Raj Madawala is a name that simply cannot be ignored. This blog post is dedicated to exploring his literary style and what make
Who is Mohan Raj Madawala?
Mohan Raj Madawala is more than just a writer; he is a unique
"storyteller " of our time. Born in the scenic area of Teldeniya in the Kandy district, I believe the natural environment he grew up in has deeply influenced the raw, earthy connection to nature seen in his writing.
By profession, he is a senior journalist with extensive experience in both print and broadcast media. Perhaps this background is what gave him the insight to strip away societal pretenses and write about the true, unvarnished emotions of people.
He gained immense popularity for re-introducing 'Magical Realism' to the Sinhala readership in a fresh way. This style blends everyday reality with mystical, cosmic, or dream-like elements. Through his works, he explores Sri Lankan history, folklore, and human sexuality from a perspective that challenges conventional thinking.
My Favourite Books by Mohan Raj Madawala...
01.Magam Soliya ( මාගම්සෝලිය )
(The original book cover of the novel 'Magam Sola")
This is arguably Madawala's masterpiece. It explores the inseparable bond between a woman's body, spirituality, and nature through the lens of magical realism. the novel beautifully intertwines Sri Lankan folklore with the raw essence of rural life.
02.Lovina (ලොවීනා )
( The book cover of the novel 'Lovina' )
A captivating love story that oscillates between historical facts and fiction. It breathes new life into the legend of Governor Thomas Maitland and the lower-caste dancer Lovina, associated with Mount Lavinia Hotel, presenting their romance from a perspective never seen before.
03.Adaraniya Victoria ( ආදරණීය වික්ටෝරියා )
( The original book cover of the novel " Adaraniya Victoria " )
A bold novel that challenges societal norms and traditional concepts of family. It openly discusses the complexities of human desires and relationships, creating a narrative that deeply provokes the reader's thoughts and emotions.
04.Mandodari ( මන්දෝදරී )
( The book cover of the novel " Mandodari ")
While we are familiar with the character of Mandodari from the Ravana legends, Madawala presents a completely different interpretation in this novel. Blending history, mythology, and magic, he artistically
explores Mandodari’s womanhood and her inner struggles. This book goes beyond the conventional Ravana narrative, offering a deeply feminist and human perspective.
The Writing Style...
What sets Madawala apart is his bold and artistic exploration of human emotion and sexuality. He fearlessly touches upon themes that are often considered taboo in traditional Sri Lankan society, blending them with folklore and history.
Why Study Him ?
Mohan Raj Madawala has played a significant role in reviving the reading habit among the younger generation in Sri Lanka. His language is accessible, yet the underlying meanings are profound. If you haven't read any of his work yet, I highly recommend starting with 'Magam Sola'.
